The details on these owls is remarkable, the feathers so real and those giant, spooky, halloween type eyes just looking right through you. The owl was a favorite bookend subject since it was the symbol of Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and thus associated with the knowledge found in books. Then they often painted them, coldpainted process, in vivid, gleaming fnishes, like these. By these remnants, we can always tell how genuine they are. What they did was dip plaster molds into a bronze solution by means of long metal wicks in the bases. This process also produced some of the most colorful, lustrous and long lasting finishes. As such, they are prized by antique bookend collectors. Marion Bronze, along with Pompeian, Armor and Galvano Bronze, made bookends a certain ways from about 1922 to 1938, that was so expensive and time consuming that they have yet to be faked or duplicated. They were then finished in long lasting, lustrous bronze and polychrome finishes by hand like these. They are also guaranteed to be old, original and genuine. Pompeian Bronze, along with it's contemporaries Marion, Armor and Galvano Bronze, made bookends a certain way by dipping plaster molds into a bronzing solution by long metal wicks until bronze clad. They are each clearly signed MB on one side of the base. They measure just shy of 9 inches tall and weigh 8 pounds the pair.
